OUR LADY OF ROSARY CHURCH - MIYAPUR
DIVINE WORD MISSIONARIES ( SVDs ) IN Telangana
1. General data concerning the local situation :-
Based on the charism of the Society of the Divine Word, We, the SVDs landed in Andhra Pradesh mission field in the year 1972. The first batch of pioneers chose the remote rural areas where the people were left as sheeps without the shepherds. Thus with the good response and collaboration of the local people, the Government and the diocesan authorities, we branched out to many rural villages, reaching out the Marginalized. As we look back our meaningful presence and achievements in Andhra Pradesh, we are more and more encouraged to stoop down to the gross-root level, catering to the spiritual and material needs of the less fortuned. The young and energetic SVD confreres too gladly volunteer to spread the Word of God to the unknown areas in and through spiritual and socio-economical activities to uplift the rural mass. Currently we are working in the diocese of Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Warangal, Guntur and Khammam.
The SVD India Hyderabad Province comprises of three states namely Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Since 1961 we also have taken up various activities in Tamil Nadu such as pastoral, social, educational and retreat and counseling ministries. Currently we are working in the diocese of Madurai, Trichy, Chennai, Thanjavur and Palayamkottai.
Thus as a missionary congregation we have felt the pulse of the people of our mission. Indeed it is marvelous to note that the SVD fathers are involved in pastoral, mission, biblical, educational, medical, social, communication and youth ministries.
2. Catholic Church in Medak District :-
The Catholic Church in Medak district can truly be called a migrant church. The existing Christian communities of Medak district are not the result of direct preaching of Christian faith to the local people. Medak district remained unattended by the Christian missionaries till the last quarter of the 19th century. Then it witnessed an influx of protestant missionaries and an intense drive among the local people. The famine of 1896-1900 forced many Christians from coastal Andhra Pradesh to abandon their original habitant and seek asylum elsewhere.
Many Christians from Guntur migrated to Nalgonda and Warangal districts of Telangana in search of employment and agricultural land. In another wave of migration, around 1940, Catholics from Khetapally, Addagudur and Ragapuram of Warangal diocese settled in Alirajpet and the surrounding villages of Gajwel Taluq. Since the Catholics originally migrated from Guntur district Via Warangal and Nalgonda, they are even now known as “Guntur people”. The religious needs of the migrants were taken care of by the fathers based in the Archbishop’s house, Secunderabad. As the transport facilities were meager, the people in the interior villages could be only reached on foot or by bullock cart. In this fashion the priests used to make three to four visits a year. This timely help given by the diocesan authorities helped the people to keep their faith alive.
The shape of Catholic Church in Medak district underwent a radical change with the arrival of the Divine Word missionaries in the district in 1972. Apart from the apostolates, today we cater to the pastoral need of Catholics and formation of children.
